Jstern Greys (the new khakis)

Dear readers,

I finally finished the Jennifer Stern Khakis pattern (in charcoal) that I cut out over 90 days ago.
 In the above picture I paired the pants with a charcoal jacket (that is similar but not exact match).
If you're a follower of the blog - you may know I'm a big fan of Jennifer Stern patterns.  In fact, my TNT Jeans pattern is Jennifer Stern - so I used that pattern to ensure that the sizing was correct and used the same crotch seam for this pair - so I knew I would have a good fit without a toile.   I made a mistake in the waistband (easing it in) but found excess material (unusual for me) to remake it without the ease.
 Pictures were difficult due to the Pixie and Paddy being a little too excited, Pixie above.
The fabric is a grey stretch charcoal denim-like material bought in the denim/duck/khaki section of Mood LA  -  I never wear khakis myself due to the similarity in features to the Croc Hunter, Steve Irwin.  I had some execution problems with the zipper so you see it's not a perfect sewing production.  I didn't check it after really taking my time putting it in - I also seem to remember Jennifer has a tutorial on her website that I could have use.

I also used a button and put on belt loops (as I always need a belt by the end of the day seemingly no matter what pants I am wearing).  I apologize for the over-exposure but wanted to show details on the dark charcoal fabric.
 The obligatory shot, above - I'm quite happy with the fit.  They are ridiculously comfortable.

Paddy this time,  really??   Making this pair made me fall back in love with my Jennifer Stern red jeans below.  I'm wearing them again and loving the comfort.
 Wonderful fit.  If you haven't taken her jeans class, I highly recommend it - I took mine at the ASG (American Sewing Guild) National Conference.
It was hot last weekend so I got to wear sandals one day - now it's back to freezing.

I'm been sew productive - two more pillowcases, kitchen towels, and working on finishing two scarfs.

I'm not sure what is next  -  I think I want to do Colette's Jacket Sew-Along.  . . .

BTW, I am planning on attending the ASG conference in DC in August.

Cuffed Pants Hem Tutorial

I bought some great pants from Ann Taylor recently, a rayon/cotton/spandex blend herringbone fully lined in poly, with cuffed hems.  For $40, thank you additional 40% off clearance rack. When taking them apart to re-hem, I really liked the way they did it, so here for your future assistance (or total confusion, we'll see) is the method.  This creates a 1 3/4" cuff, I'm sure you could modify the numbers to make it wider or narrower but I'll leave the math to you. (If you're starting with already hemmed pants, you need to rip out all the previous stitching.  Yes it's a pain, just get it over with and then pretend it didn't happen.) 1.  You need a 3" hem allowance.  That means 3 inches of fabric below where you want the pants to stop.  Easiest way to figure this out is measure the inseam (inside leg seam from crotch to hem) on a pair of pants that is the length you want.  If you don't have any to measure, fold up a hem and secure with pins, then try

Bernina Aurora 430! & Embroidery - Yeah or Nay?

Dear Readers, Yes, with a portion of my tax refund - about three months ago I bought a Bernina from a dealer that was retiring (after 50 years) and received a significant discount.  I chose the Bernina Aurora 430.  I didn't really need a new machine - but I did want to upgrade at the discounted price and try a Bernina.  It was a difficult decision in terms of what model to buy and I didn't have a lot of time to think about it. I list the pattern review HERE.   I am happy I bought it - make not mistake - this is a luxury.  After purchasing it I gave my Janome TB30 to my brother's fiance because her machine broke.  I love it.  It handles lightweight fabrics better than my Janome.  The stitches and stitching power is greater and certainly it is more accurate (once you discount the user:)). One big difference is the metal bobbin (like my straight stitch Featherweight 221) - I believe it is more precise than the Janome - but to be honest the Janome is a great machine too.   But

A dress form and much-needed tank tops

I'm super excited about my latest craiglist acquisition, a Dress Rite professional dress form. I just picked her up last Thursday, for a great price and in almost new condition. She has collapsible shoulders, linen covering, thick padding, and is on a sturdy wheeled frame with fully adjustable height. I've had so much fun playing with her this weekend, draping fabric is a breeze on a form, and combining outfits is so much easier. It gives you a very objective look at whatever you are working on. She's a little smaller than me in the waist and hip, so I'll probably try a bit of padding if I want to use it strictly for my own garments. The shoulders and bust are actually really close, it was weird to see my own clothes on her! No name yet, but I am up for suggestions from the blog world. :-) I've been trying to replace worn items in my closet, and of the 5 favorite tanks I have 3 of them have holes.
